How To Plan A Station Rotation Head of Content and Curriculum, Julie Mason, draws on her experience as a blended and personalized learning coach and walks you through the steps for designing a station rotation model so you can try a new instructional approach this school year. by Julie Mason Trying something new in the classroom is daunting. We tend to teach the way that we were taught. Often this means whole-group instruction. The Gradual Release may feel like the safer route, but is the safer route what students need? If you are noticing that your students aren’t engaged, motivated or taking ownership over their learning, it is time to abandon the safe route and try a new approach. Here’s how to plan a Station Rotation. A Station Rotation will provide you will an instructional framework where you can personalize and differentiate instruction. Your students will experience different learning opportunities to engage with a topic and practice new skills. 1. Choose the topic or skill you plan to teach. Less is more when it comes to facilitating a station rotation, especially when this instructional model is new to you. Keep it simple. Choose a skill like how to identify the main idea or a topic like characterization. 2. Decide how many rotations you will include. Station Rotations usually have three rotations, but ultimately it is up to you to decide what will work best for you and your students. If you have an especially large class, adding a fourth rotation might make sense so there aren’t too many students at each rotation. 3. Write a learning target for each rotation. Instructional time is precious. We never have enough of it. It is important that the learning activities that students are engaged in at each rotation are meaningful, and connected to learning targets. It is also important that students are aware of what the learning are so they are accountable for the work at each rotation. 4. Design learning activities for each rotation. Now that you know what topic or skill you are teaching, and what the learning targets are, you are ready to design what students will be doing at each rotation. It is important to keep in mind how much time you will have for each rotation. For example, if you have a 60 minute class period, you will likely need five minutes to set students up, five minutes to wrap up, and 15 minutes for transitions. This means your station rotations will be fifteen minutes long, and whatever activity you design, students should be able to complete it within that time frame. 5. Strategically group students. It is a best practice to make one of your station rotations a teacher-led station. This gives you the opportunity to work with a small group of students and differentiate your instruction. When you determine groupings for your rotation, plan those groupings based on the instruction you will be giving at your rotation. 6. Create task cards.   The station rotation model doesn’t work well if students at other stations are getting up out of their seats and interrupting you during your teacher-led rotation. To keep this from happening, create a task card for the other two rotations that includes the learning target and also outlines the specific directions for that activity. 7. Decide how you will assess students It is important to hold students accountable for the work that they complete at each rotation. I recommend giving students an Exit Ticket or a small assessment that is one question that you can collect. Looking at this will provide you with helpful data that you can use to determine your next instructional move. 8. Practice! Before you do your first station rotation, walk students through the process. Answer questions that come up, and explain the expectations as well as how students will transition from one station to the other. 9. Get student feedback. Any time you try something new, know that it isn’t going to go smoothly at first. You will likely make changes as you go. It is helpful to thank your students for trying something new, and to give them the opportunity to provide you with feedback on how it is working for them, and what suggestions they have. This creates buy-in and usually increases engagement. 10. Keep going! Don’t give up if at first it seems easier to go back to whole-group instruction rather than continue to try this model. Start small. Maybe use the station rotation model once/week. You can always build from there. Be patient with yourself, and pat yourself on the back for trying something new. My High School Swimming Career - 975 Words

Swimming has been an integral part of my life since I was nine years old. I have swam on four different teams and have had several different coaches. My high school swimming experience has been particularly significant to me and can be accurately described by a quote in the novel Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. The quote, â€Å"It is more difficult and more bitter when a man fails alone,† (Achebe) can be used to describe my high school swimming career. Freshman and Sophomore year I experienced personal success, but team failure. This was a bitter time for me. My junior and senior year, I have not experienced personal success, and yet, I feel more fulfilled because my team has accomplished more. Mona Shores joined another co-op team my junior year of high school. This created a larger team with a wide variety of teammates from across the county, as well as provided me with a new coach. While personal success can be rewarding and motivating, I have found through my swimming experiences that success as a team is much more fulfilling. As a freshman, I came into high school swim season not knowing what to expect. I was intimidated by the older swimmers and was anxious about the new team. I knew the coach from a team I had previously swam on; the relationship I had with this coach was not a positive one. I felt that I could do nothing to please her and she always found something to complain about. When the word autism is stated what is the first picture that comes to mind? Is it a child throwing themselves on the ground and having an uncontrollable fit because the situation has changed from the standard routine all of a sudden? Or a child that is rocking back and forth constantly, or playing with one or two toys for a very long time without getting bored. â€Å"Currently one out of 88 children is diagnosed with having an autism spectrum disorder also known as ASD†. Averting runway incursions at airports; justifying the risks of structural icing on aircraft; and the elimination of the explosive fuel in fuel tanks from the aircrafts to prevent explosions. while on the rail roads, the board comes up with a suggestion of avoiding collision systems, it also improves the safety standards of trucks and buses on the roads, this may require the use of seat belts, it also implements the promotion of highway safety through licensing and also ensuring that the driving laws are adhered to by the members of the country, and in marine transportation, the board enhances the recreational boating safety; and the post-accident drug and alcohol testing. What he has mentioned in this chapter is that there is a whole other world in our minds that creates dreams and thoughts that we as humans beings want to show through theatre. Which I feel is very accurate. Plays are not only made to tell a story, but to connect to every human being’s mind, whether it’s an audience member or even the actor. We all want to create a similar â€Å"image† that Jones mentions and that image need to transfer from the playwright to the director to the designers and to the actors and finally to the audience. Art in the Theatre In this chapter Jones is trying to define what real art in the theatre is. Now, here I agree with some of his ideas but at the same time I don’t agree with some of the things he says. For example he mentions that he as an audience member wants to see an â€Å"eyeful† in a set, or that he doesn’t want to see clever contraption where a piece of a set or prop transforms from one thing to another and is the same piece of set but with a new purpose. Now that’s his opinion and every artist has their idea what art is. It’s like Graffiti, some people think it’s just scribble and vandalism but others think it’s artistic. But, I feel a designer who can create a set that has many purposes and can convince the audience that one piece of scenery was actually many different things is very artistic and extremely creative. Jones also mentions that having almost no set is not very entertaining to see. I will agree it may be boring to look at but then I can truly focus on the actors and how they use their skill to create the environment for us. Like for example I saw a production of Our Town where the only piece of set was a ladder and a few chairs and the actors pantomime every prop, and yes I will admit it shouldve had a set but the point the director was trying to make there was that simple things can go a long way. The Theatre Then and Now So in this chapter Jones is explaining the history of theatre. At the end he says â€Å"All past theater had a dream, an excitement, a high, a rare mood, a conception of greatness. We should try to bring back the excitement in theatre† I agree that the past theatre had more excitement. But that was the past. We need to create our own excitement in theater. We can use the past to guide us but the reason why the past was so great because it create its uniqueness at its time. Now we should create our own uniqueness. To a Young Stage Designer Jones mentions the many things that a set designer must consider and what qualifications he/she must have when designing a set. Most of this I agree with. He says that a designer must have different techniques, and I feel that is true that a designer need to know almost every trick in the trade to be really successful in this business. He also mentions that a designer must practically immersed themselves into their set and almost be a part of the time era it is in. Which is really vital because if the designer can’t truly imagine he is in the setting of the play how is the audience going to imagine that they are in the time era of the play? I feel like a designer should use a technique only when it is necessary. Some Thoughts on Stage Costumes So honestly, when reading this chapter I had no idea what Jones was talking about. I only picked up on a few key points. Like that the costume should be suited to the character and the occasion. Which I agree but I feel that sometimes the costume can relate to the theme of a play or help the audience realize something about the character. Like for example if the character wears purple and gold the audience triggers an idea that the character is royal or high in the upper class. Jones goes into detail about how costumes should trigger memories or the human senses because then it helps the audience truly understand the character even more. Light and Shadow in the Theatre Jones mentions many things in which I agree upon. For example he mentions that light has more than one use then to light the stage so the audience can see the actors. We use light as an art form. Light is vital to a play just how light is vital for an art piece. In basic art I learned that a good art piece combines light and shadow and whether if there is more than the other can set the atmosphere of the piece. Like how if there is more light then the mood is happy and bright And if there is more darks then the mood is gloomy. It also interesting in a piece where there is a various combination of both. Jones also mentions that the location and timing of when the light goes on to when it changes or goes off is also key to a good lighting design. The lights can help the audience understand thing about a play that the actors cannot portray. Like for example if a character were to kill another character, instead of using fake blood to portray that one character is dead, you can use red lights to symbolize death. I like the idea of lights working with the story and probably adding more to the theme of the story.

Emma Watson and bell hooks Discuss Feminism If you imagine who British actor Emma Watson is hanging out with on any given day, feminist icon bell hooks probably doesnt come to mine. But it turns out that Watson, the UN Women Goodwill Ambassador, and hooks, a leading feminist theorist and cultural critic, have mutual girl crushes on each other. Watson began reading hookss work after her appointment to the UN, and hooks is a fan of Emmas for her portrayal of Hermione Granger in the  Harry Potter  film series. The Struggle to be Cool Watson and hooks reflected on how girls and women often struggle to actualize their authentic, empowered selves because of internalized expectations of who we are supposed to be and how we are supposed to act. Watson recounted how when she first began playing Hermione Granger, she felt pressure to distance herself from the character while giving interviews out of a fear that it was not cool for girls to behave like Hermione. She remembers asking herself, What do young girls talk about? The Importance of Self-Love and Not Trying to Please Everybody When hooks asked Watson what power means to her in the context of feminism, Watson explained that what has been most empowering for her as she has studied feminism through reading is how it has enabled her to let go of self-criticism, and instead, to practice self-love. hooks added that, especially in the digital age, when people can so easily take your words and actions out of context and vilify you for them, it is important for women and girls to get over any kind of attachment to perfectionism, or to being liked by everybody all the time, or understood by everybody all the time. Girls and women, far more than boys and men, are socialized to please others, and it is truly hard to shake off this expectation, but the truth is, it is not our job to make everyone happy and like us. And this is truly a liberating realization. Feminists Can Be and Are Fun and Funny! Both Watson and hooks acknowledge that feminism gets a bad rap because of stereotypes of feminists as humorless killjoys, and this is a serious problem for the movement. In contrast, Watson explained that part of what she loves about hooks is how funny she is when she speaks about feminism. hooks then pointed out, Humor is essential to working with difficult subjects: race, gender, class, sexuality. If you cant laugh at yourself and be with others in laughter, you really cannot create meaningful social change. Feminists Must Be Allowed to Be Whole, Complex, and Balanced People Related to the fact that feminists can be and are funny,  hooks discussed the larger problem of women not being represented as whole and complex people as they age. Instead, in popular culture and in the popular imaginary, they lose their sexuality, their empowerment, and the essence of what makes them cool- something that hooks fears happened to Hermione in the film version of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. hooks admitted that as she has aged, she has felt constrained by expectations that she must be the activist version of herself at all times, but that there is more to who she is than the person who fights racism and sexism. She explained that she is genuinely interested in fashion and beauty too, and she counseled Watson to keep fun and leisure in her new life of activism, saying, Everyone needs to have a balanced life. Being balanced is crucial, because it helps us not to over-extend or to try to live up to other peoples expectations in ways that leave you feeling empty . Feminism is Listening and Learning hooks applauded Watson for working hard to learn about feminism and issues that affect women and girls by reading widely and by engaging broadly with a diverse group of people. Watson said of taking a year off from acting, I want to do a lot of listening, which is an important aspect of the feminist worldview and practice: listening to others and learning from them. We Must Bravely Breach Boundaries The meetings- theyve had a few now- and conversations between Watson and hooks have crossed boundaries of age, race, class, nationality, profession, and that between academia and the public sphere. This kind of meeting and talking across boundaries, with respect for difference and an interest in learning from it, is crucial to the liberatory work of feminism. Of their newfound bond and shared commitment to feminism, hooks remarked, I feel like part of creating a world that is just and diverse is pushing against those boundaries that close us off from one another. Im glad that Im not closed off from you, and that were going to have more fun conversations in the days ahead. Anyone who fancies themselves a feminist, or a person committed to equality for all, can learn a lot from these two.
